In Memoriam: B. Dalton @ The Mall at Peachtree Center
If you know me, you know that I love bookstores. When I go on trips, I always like to scope out the local bookstores. So I was sad, but not surprised, this weekend to find out that the B. Dalton at Peachtree Center mall in Atlanta had finally closed.
If you have never attended Dragon*Con, The Mall at Peachtree Center is a small shopping center that is right next door to the Hyatt Regency - literally. Without even having to step outside, you can walk through the automatic doors of the hotel and you're there. Covered walkways connect the mall to the Marriott Marquis as well. The mall probably has more tenants in their food court than actual stores, and most Dragon*Con attendees heavily use their restaurants over Labor Day weekend.
The B. Dalton had been there ever since I had been going to Dragon*Con, which is about 13 years at this point. It was a small store - barely larger than a bookstore you'd find at a major airport - but it was jam packed. Yeah, Dragon*Con has vendor areas, including a couple of terrific places that sell books, but it was still nice to be able to walk directly from the hotel to an actual bookstore. While those vendors have a lot of SF/Fantasy/Horror books, if you were on the lookout for another genre or just wanted to pick up a magazine for light reading in the hotel, you could grab those things easily at this store. Plus, it was a nice place to catch a breath away from the con for a few minutes and still be able to shop for books ;)
It probably sounds lame to eulogize a bookstore, and a chain store at that, but I remember a lot of cool things connected to that place at Dragon*Con time. I remember one year Brian Froud was a guest. That year, B. Dalton had a couple of copies of his "Goblin Companion" in their bargain book section, so I picked up a couple of copies, then took them to get signed for a friend and I. That location was also the place where I picked up Jeanne Stein's first two novels one year the day before the first Dragon*Con she ever attended. Plus, it was a cool place to go the day _after_ Dragon*Con. These days I am so tired that I do not feel like driving home after the con, so I tend to stay in a friend's room for one last night. And after the hustle and bustle of the preceding days, it's a strange feeling to see the hotels "back to normal." Stopping at that B. Dalton on my way out and picking one last item up had become a tradition in the past couple of years.
RIP, guys.

Performance Act Application Form
I say this so much that it has become a joke to my friends, but I do not book bands for Dragon*Con. However, the application form for bands and performers is now up.

The year has barely begun, and Dragon*Con's Dark Fantasy track already has a lot of great guest names to announce. We're going to have a mix of returning guests with several strong newcomers as well. If you like Urban Fantasy, this will not be the year to miss.
Among the first-time guests, we will host Doug Bradley, Charlaine Harris, Mark Henry, Stacia Kane, Richelle Mead, Mike Mignola, and Kat Richardson. Returning guests include John Everson, Raven Hart, Sherrilyn Kenyon, Jackie Kessler, Caitlin Kittredge, J.F. Lewis, Jonathan Maberry, Heather Osborn, Cherie Priest, Jeanne C. Dark Fantasy Podcast
We're a little late with this (which is my fault), but me and track volunteer Michael Miller have created a short podcast for the Dark Fantasy track! It's not as comprehensive as we would have liked, and we planned to do a follow-up featuring more of the "goth" programming, but it's a fun little diversion if you want to hear my accent before you get to the con.

Programming Schedule 2008
Here is the Dark Fantasy schedule for 2008:
RIGHT HERE! LOOK!
This will be it unless changes are made by my senior directors, pending guest commitments and all that...
I hope that everyone who attends this year enjoys my programming. My guest list is not just great - it's phenomenal. It's an excellent start for a new direction.
